[vc_row][vc_column][us_single_image image=”938″ size=”full” align=”center”][vc_column_text]From time to time, changes in a family’s circumstances means they need to move away from Rome and we have to bid farewell to one of our pupils and their parents. Saying goodbye to someone we care about is hard. It’s hard for the student who’s going and hard for their friends, classmates and teachers they leave behind.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Recently Classes two and three bid farewell to Izzy and Alex whose family moved to London; but for the class Izzy was still part of their community. A letter writing lesson ensued with the class writing personal messages and exhibiting Izzy’s art work in a group photo. In this way their classmate would have a meaningful memento of her time at Castelli. And our Alex was our ‘chef’ gardener, always bringing fresh tomatoes and green chips to his classmates.
But Izzy and Alex are not the only ones we keep in touch with. Class 5 and Class 8 also said goodbye to some of their classmates recently, but everyone is still in regular contact because from Grade 4 all our students have a secure internal email and each of the students regularly blast off a “How you’re doing?” message and keep up-to-date with each other. We even managed to include three students in online “long-distance” preparation for the Harvard Model United Nations Conference, 2015. One student moved to America, another to Denmark and another to London but we all managed to attend and participate in the Conference. We really do go the extra mile at Castelli. It’s what we’re all about.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][us_single_image image=”939″ size=”full”][vc_column_text]Alex our ‘chef’ Gardener.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][us_single_image image=”940″][vc_column_text]
Grade 8 wave goodbye to their classmate, but not only do they keep in touch via email – the whole class met up with their friend in Boston for the HMUN conference.
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]It’s not uncommon, when opportunities allow, that the students who have left come back for a visit during term time. When they do, they can spend a few hours at school to enjoy the company of their friends.
You see, at Castelli, community is not just a concept. It is a real thing. We are a warm, caring and loving school, and we celebrate friendships, and recognise how unsettling moves can be. We then do what we can to turn them into positive experiences.
Similarly, it is not uncommon for new students to join us mid-year and when this happens, we make sure the child is warmly welcomed by his new classmates and teacher.
Our school motto is “When you tell me, I may listen; when you show me, I may understand; but when you involve me, I will learn”, and we also add a footnote, that being: When you have been or become part of our community, we really do care.
